CARPET CARE
Almost every carpet or rug is occasionally
the victim of spots or stains. Most of these
accidents can be taken care of with little
trouble. We've listed a few remedies below
to resolve matters quickly but we always recommend
contacting a professional carpet cleaner in
most instances.
A
few immediate actions you can do in the event
of an accident:
1.
For wet stains, dab the spot with a clean,
white cloth or paper towel to remove as much
of the stain as possible. Do not brush or
rub the spotted area and never use soap on
any carpet.
2.
Contact your local professional carpet cleaner.

| TYPE
OF STAIN |
EXAMPLES |
TREATMENT |
|
Oily
Substances |
Butter,
grease, oil, hand cream, ball-point pen ink |
Scoop
up as much as possible with large, loose wad
of absorbent cloths, soft paper towels, or
tissues, then apply dry-cleaning fluid in
tiny dozes, repeating if necessary. Dry carpet
with air stream from vacuum, hair dryer, or
electric fan. Brush up pile when dry. |
|
Foodstuffs
and animal matter |
Coffee,
tea, cream, milk, gravy, chocolate, egg, ice
cream, peanut butter, sauces, salad dressing,
vomit, blood |
Remove
excess. Sponge with detergent solution, using
one teaspoon of mild (not heavy duty) detergent
to a quart of warm water and add one teaspoon
of white vinegar. If spot still shows after
applying solution, let area dry, then use
dry-cleaning fluid sparingly. Dry well; brush
up pile |
|
Starches
and sugars |
Candy,
soft drinks, alcoholic beverages |
Blot
up excess, then sponge gingerly with the detergent
solution. Blot up as much solution as possible.
Force dry. If necessary, repeat entire procedure.
Dry again; brush up pile. |
|
Acids
and inks |
Fruit,
washable ink, urine |
Remove
excess, sponge with detergent solution repeating
if necessary. Dry carpet thoroughly between
sponging. Dry again; brush up pile. |
|
Heavy
grease and gums |
Candle
wax, chewing gum |
Both
candle wax and chewing gum respond to "freezing".
Wrap an ice cube in a paper towel and hold
it on the gum or candle wax. In a few seconds,
you should be able to lift it off. A whisk
of dry-cleaning fluid may be in order. For
other heavy substances, sponge with dry-cleaning
fluid followed with detergent solution. Repeat
procedure until substances are removed. Dry
carpet; brush up pile |

Further
tips for carpet care are as follows:
1.
Normal vacuum cleaning every day is recommended
to maintain pile. It is important that the
direction of vacuuming is 'varied' (N,S,E
and W) so that pile is not pushed in one direction.
This applies especially to thick cut pile
carpets.
2.
Big Corridor Trolleys should have a 'Ball'
roller rather than narrow wheeled ones.
3.
Do not use strong chemicals (as normally used
in synthetic carpets). These are 100% wool
and less chemicals are required for cleaning.
4.
If spillage occurs, the quicker the action
the better.
